With extensive personal experience running several hundred charters annually, I can confidently distinguish between a successful and a disappointing day on the water. I had the pleasure of fishing with Captain Poncho for three consecutive days, and here is a summary of those outings. These fishermen consistently find fish, even with modest gear and minimal electronics—one boat carried just a VHF and GPS (without a transducer), and the panga had neither—proof that the fishing conditions were favorable.
On the first day, my wife accompanied me, and we stayed in sheltered waters to prevent seasickness. The sierra mackerel bite was nearly continuous, and we quickly reached our limits. Although deep-water jigging yielded no results, on the return trip near the fleet, we encountered bait schools that sparked an intense jack crevalle strike. The aggressive fish eagerly chased surface plugs, making for a thrilling experience that lasted longer than my arms could endure! We also caught some small skipjacks and released a few small groupers. That night, we enjoyed fresh mackerel ceviche.
Day two saw my wife resting while Captain Poncho and I ventured out in a panga. Using land-based landmarks, he located a shelf at about 150 feet depth, 10 miles east of the marina. Despite windy, rough waters for such a small vessel, we found ourselves alongside a couple of commercial handliners in even tinier boats. We caught a few bonito, and Captain Poncho jigged up a nice red snapper before I landed a 55-pound amberjack on a Squidtrex rigged with 25-pound fluorocarbon leader. We had amberjack steaks for dinner, reminiscent of swordfish.
On the final day, with the center console boat and my wife aboard, we returned to the mackerel grounds. Even without live bait and relying on frozen offerings, the fish were biting steadily. While drifting, I jigged near the bottom (50-60 feet) with soft plastics, landing several large sculpins, a couple of triggerfish, and a bonito. Only the bonito was kept for delicious fish tacos. Overall, the trip was fantastic, guided by attentive and skilled people. My only advice would be to bring quality tackle if available. The crew made us feel at ease despite it being our first trip with them. Truly an incredible experience!
Three couples embarked on a six-hour fishing adventure across the Sea of Cortez and left thrilled, thanks to Captain Jaime’s effortless setup and swift service. After securing fishing licenses at the marina the morning of the excursion, they caught two marlins, including a personal record-breaking 150-pounder. Excited for a return trip next year.
However, not all experiences met expectations. One guest expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of crew interaction and frustration over being confined to trolling only 6 miles offshore for over six hours, catching just a few undersized tuna. The charter, intended to last eight hours, was marred by minimal engagement, poor results, and the feeling of merely being on a boat tour rather than an active fishing trip. After paying a steep price, the disappointment was palpable. Despite comparable experiences elsewhere around the world, this trip fell short.
We sincerely regret that the experience did not meet expectations, especially on such a special occasion. On that day, a shortage of live sardines limited bait options, so the crew made the most of the few squid bags they had, securing a couple of tunas and a skipjack. Though two sharks struck during the outing, local regulations prohibit retaining sharks, which was explained onboard. When the squid ran out, the crew switched tactics to target larger species like marlin, dorado, or wahoo, though the fish remained elusive. Trolling with multiple lines at varied distances behind the boat remains the primary offshore fishing strategy in Los Cabos, as noted during the trip. Understanding the frustration when fish are scarce, we want to assure guests that every effort is made to deliver a memorable experience under prevailing conditions.
We reached out to express regret that the birthday trip did not go as hoped. The crew worked hard to locate fish, but sometimes the catch is limited. Fishing success can vary day-to-day, and we appreciate the chance to offer a discount for a future trip in hopes of better luck.
Another group praised the crew's skill in guiding them to multiple tuna and a 200-pound marlin, yet noted concerns about the vessel's condition. Issues included lack of ice in the cooler, outdated or misleading boat photos, holes in the flooring posing hazards, and a wobbly fishing chair, raising safety worries. While appreciative of the crew’s efforts to deliver plentiful fishing opportunities, the state of the boat did not meet their expectations.
We thank this group for their candid feedback and congratulate them on the impressive marlin catch. The boat undergoes comprehensive maintenance and refurbishment annually, scheduled for this September, covering structural repairs, cosmetic enhancements, safety upgrades, and thorough cleaning. We are addressing the ice availability to improve beverage cooling for guests throughout the trip. Honest reviews like this help us continuously improve, and we appreciate their support.
Additionally, we contacted Nate to offer a makeup trip, glad he still enjoyed good fishing and quality time with his group.
Conversely, a family’s experience was marred by disorganization and poor communication at the marina. Payment processes for bait and licenses were confusing, staff interactions limited, and limited explanations were provided during the six-hour trip. At times, the crew focused on fishing without engaging guests, including lingering too long in rough waters. When encountering whales, the boat did not stop for sightseeing. Their catch included only one tuna and two mahi mahi, with minimal effort to celebrate the catch. Safety concerns included engine smoke, lack of safety instructions, and unclear presence of life jackets. Despite smooth transportation arrangements, the overall trip was disappointing, especially for first-time families.
To clarify: Felipe, who manages check-in, may be occupied with other clients, causing brief delays. Bait is preloaded on the boat and licenses are digitally available aboard to comply with legal requirements, avoiding hefty fines. Communication may slow during slower fishing seasons as the crew concentrates on maximizing catches. Safety equipment, including life jackets, is onboard in compliance with charter permits. Trips focus primarily on fishing, with limited opportunities for whale watching when efficient fishing is the goal. While the boats are not brand new, they are well maintained. Ultimately, the priority is making sure guests catch fish and enjoy the experience.
Regarding a particularly troubling trip, safety concerns were taken seriously, and an investigation is underway. To rectify the situation, the guest has been offered a coupon for another adventure. Ensuring guest safety is our paramount concern, and we are committed to addressing these issues promptly.
