I fished with Captain Poncho for three consecutive days, and I’ll share a summary of the experience. First off, this crew consistently catches fish, which is impressive considering their modest gear and minimal electronic devices—one boat featured only a VHF and GPS without a transducer, and another lacked both. This tells me the fishing conditions are quite promising.

On day one, with my wife aboard, we stayed sheltered to prevent seasickness. We enjoyed a nearly continuous sierra mackerel bite and reached our limit quickly. Though deep-water jigging didn’t yield much, we encountered an exciting jack crevalle bite on the way back. The jack crevalles aggressively took surface plugs, producing thrilling action. We also caught a few small skipjacks and released some grouper. That evening, we savored mackerel ceviche.

Day two saw my wife resting at home while Poncho and I headed out in a panga to a shelf about 10 miles east of the marina in 150 feet of water. Despite the wind and rough conditions, we shared the spot with a couple of commercial handliners in even smaller boats. We caught some bonito, and Poncho drew up a sizable red snapper with his jig. I managed a 55-pound amberjack using a Squidtrex lure with a 25-pound fluorocarbon leader, making for delicious amberjack steaks at dinner.

On day three, with Poncho at the helm of the center console and my wife back on board, we returned to the mackerel area. Even using frozen bait, the mackerel bit steadily. While drifting, I jigged near the bottom and hooked several large sculpins, some triggerfish, and a bonito—all but the bonito were released. The bonito made perfect fish tacos. Overall, the trip was excellent, thanks to a friendly and attentive crew. My only advice: bring your best fishing gear. This was definitely an amazing adventure, especially for first-timers who felt immediately welcomed.

A group of three couples enjoyed a six-hour Sea of Cortez outing with great success, catching two marlins — including the largest fish of their lives at 150 pounds. Captain Jaime handled the arrangements smoothly, even securing fishing licenses on the morning of the trip. They plan to return next year.

However, not all experiences have been positive. One guest reported disappointment, stating there was almost no interaction with the crew during an eight-hour inshore and deep-sea fishing charter. The fishing was limited to trolling very close behind the boat for over six hours, with little guidance or engagement. They caught only three undersized tuna, releasing one, and left feeling uneasy and dissatisfied after paying $750.

We regret that their trip did not meet expectations, especially on such a special occasion. On the day of their trip, live sardines were unavailable, and only two small bags of squid were obtained. Using that bait, the crew caught two tunas and a skipjack. They also experienced two shark bites, but as per local regulations, sharks cannot be kept. Once the bait was gone, the crew attempted to target bigger species like marlin, dorado, and wahoo, but there was no response. Offshore fishing in Los Cabos relies mostly on trolling, with multiple lines at various distances from the boat, which was explained during the trip.

We understand the frustration when fish aren’t biting, but the crew maximized the day’s conditions. Our priority is to provide the best possible experience, and feedback like this helps us improve. We reached out offering a discount on a future trip in hopes of making it up to the guest.

Another party praised the crew for successfully positioning them to catch six small tuna and a 200-pound marlin during their outing. However, they noted several concerns with the boat’s condition: lack of ice to keep beverages cold, visible wear and damage including holes in the floor, an unsecured cracked fishing chair, and a messy bathroom area. While the fishing was excellent, the vessel did not match the condition portrayed in promotional images.

We congratulated them on their impressive catch and took their safety and comfort concerns very seriously. The boat undergoes annual maintenance and refurbishment, scheduled next for September, including structural, cosmetic, and safety upgrades, as well as thorough cleaning.
