Having personally guided hundreds of charters annually, I know well the difference between an excellent day on the water and a poor one. I spent three consecutive days fishing with Captain Poncho, and here is a summary of all those trips combined. First off, these captains truly deliver when it comes to catching fish. Impressively, they achieve this even with modest equipment and minimal electronics—some boats had only basic VHF radios and GPS units, with others lacking even these, indicating the fishing conditions are robust.

On the first day, with my wife aboard, we stayed in calm waters to keep her comfortable, and the sierra mackerel bite was nearly constant, allowing us to reach our limit quickly. We tried deeper jigging without success but stopped near the fleet on the way back and encountered an intense jack crevalle bite that was exhausting but thrilling. They aggressively attacked surface plugs, showing no selectiveness. We also caught a few smaller skipjacks and released some small grouper. That evening, we enjoyed making fresh mackerel ceviche for dinner.

Day two found my wife aboard for a different type of outing. Captain Poncho navigated us east of the marina to a shelf about 150 feet deep, approximately 10 miles out. Despite windy and choppy conditions for the small panga, we persevered. Nearby, two local commercial handliners operated even smaller boats. We caught a few bonito, then Poncho jigged up a nice red snapper before I landed a formidable 55-pound amberjack on a Squidtrex lure with a 25-pound fluorocarbon leader. The amberjack steaks, cooked for dinner, reminded me of swordfish in flavor.

On the third day, with my wife rejoining us, we returned to the mackerel grounds using frozen bait since live bait wasn't available, but the fish didn’t seem to mind. While drifting, I jigged near the bottom around 50-60 feet and caught several large sculpins, triggerfish, and a bonito, keeping only the bonito for fish tacos. Throughout the trip, the crew provided excellent care and hospitality. My only advice is to bring your best tackle if possible. Overall, it was an outstanding fishing adventure!

Another experience involved three couples on a six-hour fishing trip in the Sea of Cortez, and they were thrilled by the outcome, catching two marlins—including a 150-pound giant, the largest catch of their lives. Captain Jaime made the arrangements smooth and efficient, including obtaining fishing licenses at the marina the morning of the trip. They are already planning a return visit next year.

On the other hand, there have been disappointing trips as well. Some guests reported minimal interaction with the crew and fishing efforts limited mostly to trolling near the coast with very little action, catching just a few undersized tuna that were released. Comments expressed dissatisfaction with paying premium prices for what felt like a basic boat tour rather than an active fishing trip. Being only 6 miles offshore for a majority of the trip and poor communication contributed to an uncomfortable and frustrating experience. Comparisons to fishing trips in other locations worldwide indicated this was among the least satisfying.

One guest, celebrating a birthday, was especially disappointed due to the slow fishing and lack of live bait on the day of their trip. Although the crew managed to catch some tuna and skipjack, as well as deal with two sharks (which could not be kept due to local regulations), the big game fishing efforts yielded no bites. The standard technique of trolling with multiple lines set at varying distances is typical for Los Cabos offshore fishing, but sometimes the fish simply do not cooperate. The operator appreciates this feedback and hopes to use it to improve future experiences, even offering the guest a discount for a return trip.

There was also feedback regarding the condition of one of the boats. While the crew worked hard to find fish and successfully landed a 200-pound marlin, guests noted the boat was not as pristine as photos suggested. Issues such as lack of ice in coolers, safety concerns with fishing chairs, floor damage, and a messy bathroom area were all highlighted. The company acknowledged these comments and emphasized that annual maintenance and refurbishment are scheduled, including safety equipment upgrades and thorough cleaning. Measures to ensure sufficient ice onboard going forward are already being implemented.

Another review mentioned organizational confusion upon arrival, with bait and licenses requiring additional coordination. Limited communication from the crew during the outing, rough waters, and restricted opportunities for whale watching detracted from the overall experience. Safety concerns including engine smoke and unclear availability of life jackets were raised. The company clarified that the check-in staff coordinates multiple charters, licenses are handled to comply with regulations, safety equipment is always onboard, and whale watching is not typically part of the fishing itinerary. Although boats may not be new, they are maintained well to prioritize catching fish and guest safety.
