Having personally led hundreds of charters annually, I am quite familiar with what separates a productive fishing day from a disappointing one. I spent three consecutive days fishing with Captain Poncho and can summarize the experience as follows: This crew consistently lands fish, often with modest equipment and very limited electronics—one boat had only a VHF radio and GPS without a transducer, while the panga lacked both. This suggests the fishing grounds are genuinely rich.

On day one, my wife joined the trip. We stayed sheltered to prevent seasickness while the sierra mackerel bite was nearly nonstop. We quickly filled our limit and attempted deep water jigging without success. On the return trip, we encountered an intense jack crevalle bite, with aggressive fish striking surface plugs fiercely. We also caught some small skipjack and released a few small grouper. That night, we enjoyed fresh mackerel ceviche.

Day two saw just Captain Poncho and me heading out in a panga targeting a shelf about 10 miles east of the marina at around 150 feet deep. Despite rough conditions, we observed some very determined commercial handliners nearby. We caught a few bonito and then Captain Poncho jigged a nice red snapper. I managed to hook a 55-pound amberjack using a Squidtrex lure with a 25-pound fluorocarbon leader. The amberjack steaks were comparable to swordfish at dinner.

On the third day, with my wife back aboard the center console, we returned to the mackerel area. The fish were biting steadily despite us using frozen bait instead of live. While drifting, I jigged near the bottom at 50 to 60 feet and caught several large sculpins, triggerfish, and a bonito, keeping only the bonito for fish tacos. Overall, it was a well-organized, memorable trip thanks to a friendly and attentive crew. I do recommend bringing quality tackle if possible.

Another group of three couples set out for a six-hour Sea of Cortez fishing expedition and were thrilled by their success. They landed two marlins, including a 150-pound giant—the largest catch of their lives. Captain Jaime handled the arrangements smoothly and efficiently, including securing fishing licenses at the marina the morning of the trip. They are already planning to return next year.

However, not all guests shared the same positive experiences. One customer expressed dissatisfaction with an 8-hour combined inshore and offshore trip that turned into almost only trolling around 6 miles from shore. During 6.5 hours on the water, their lure was trolled very close to the boat, catching only a few undersized tuna which were released. They reported almost no engagement from the crew aside from a tip request at the end. This led to feelings of discomfort and disappointment after paying $750, with the guest deeming the excursion more like a boat tour without much fishing.

We regret such experiences and understand how frustrating it can be when the fish are not cooperating. On the day in question, live sardines were unavailable and the supplier provided only two small bags of squid. Using that limited bait, the crew managed to catch tunas and a skipjack, with a couple of sharks that couldn’t be kept due to local regulations. The captain communicated plans to switch tactics in search of larger species like marlin or dorado once the squid was depleted, but the bite did not occur that afternoon. Offshore fishing in Los Cabos typically involves trolling multiple lines at varying distances behind the boat, a detail explained onboard. We appreciate all feedback and strive to improve future experiences.

One fishing group noted the crew worked hard and successfully positioned them to catch six small tuna, several other fish, and a 200-pound marlin. However, they mentioned that the boat’s condition was not as depicted in promotional photos, citing floor holes, unsecured and cracked fishing chairs, and messy bathroom areas. Additionally, no ice was provided for drinks despite mention of a cooler. We have noted these issues and plan full maintenance and refurbishment of the boat, scheduled annually, including safety checks, repairs, and updates. Changes will also be made to supply ample ice on charters to keep beverages chilled.

Another party described a disorganized marina check-in process requiring additional calls and payments without receipts; coupled with minimal communication during their six-hour trip, where the crew fished primarily on their own. We want to clarify that the person managing check-in may be assisting other groups during busy days, bait is loaded onboard with payment required, and fishing licenses are maintained electronically to comply with legal requirements and avoid heavy fines. Crews try to communicate but prioritize fishing activities, especially in seasons with slow action. Safety equipment is mandatory and present. Trips focus on fishing rather than whale watching to maximize catch potential, and while boats may not be new, they are well maintained.
