My initial trip to Costa Rica took place in 1995, where I enjoyed world-class Tarpon fishing on the East Coast at the Barra del Colorado Lodge. This adventure became a reality after I won a raffle at a fishing tournament awards event. Two years later, I made a return visit, and during that trip, I decided that moving to Costa Rica would be a future goal when the timing felt right.
With over three decades of fishing experience in Florida, including participating in numerous tournaments and winning several, I've always had a passion for the sport. Alongside fishing, I built a career in the underground utility industry, starting from an entry-level position and rising to the role of General Superintendent, while also running a fishing charter business part-time. I raised two children and supported their college education—my daughter attended the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, and my son enrolled at Key West Community College.
Today, my daughter works with Florida Aero Precision, manufacturing parts for NASA, Boeing, and other major clients. My son chose to stay in Key West, earned his Captain's license, and now operates as a charter captain for a family-run charter business. In 2010, after getting remarried, I shared my dream with my wife of eventually relocating to Costa Rica to start a fishing charter company. At the time, she wasn’t sure if it would truly happen.
In 2019, I lost a close friend and colleague from the underground industry to cancer; he never got the chance to enjoy retirement or experience the fishing he loved. Managing a company with over 125 employees became increasingly stressful, and it took a toll on me physically. This loss motivated me to honor my friend's memory by pursuing my true passion—launching a charter fishing business before it was too late.
In 2021, I brought my wife to Quepos, Costa Rica, where she instantly fell in love with the area. We booked a follow-up trip in November, exploring the coastline and visiting various marinas and towns. Inevitably, we chose Quepos as our new home. Upon returning to Florida, we put our relatively new home, built in 2018, on the market and had a contract within 30 days. We resigned from our jobs, sold our belongings, and packed up our lives—and our two dogs—to start fresh in Quepos.
During this transition, I found the ideal boat to launch the charter business I envisioned: a striking 30-foot Palm Beach Express outfitted with a Marlin tower. Two days before our departure for Costa Rica, I finalized the purchase. Six months later, we were ready to start fishing commercially.
This beautiful 1986 30’ Palm Beach/Gamefisher, Hull #1, was built in De Oca, Costa Rica, and is one of the pioneering vessels in the country’s sportfishing industry. It features cold-molded wood construction and is powered by a single Yanmar 315 hp engine, cruising comfortably at around 21 knots—fast enough to reach prime fishing locations. The Palm Beach/Gamefisher boats are renowned for their ability to raise fish, thanks to their clean wakes and smooth rides.
Butch and Roy were incredibly welcoming and friendly, ensuring the trip was enjoyable for everyone on board, from beginners to seasoned anglers. Their humor and warmth made every moment memorable, filled with laughter and smiles. We can’t stop sharing how fantastic the experience was—it’s truly a must-try adventure.
Thank you to everyone who shared their feedback. We had an amazing time fishing with you and look forward to welcoming you again soon! Tight lines,
Captain Butch
