These FAD (Fish Aggregating Device) trips are tailored for the dedicated angler who believes they’ve experienced it all. Off the coast of Costa Rica, numerous dormant underwater volcanoes lie between 70 and 150 miles offshore. The unique variations in water depth combined with an abundance of baitfish make these locations ideal for deploying FADs. Essentially, FADs are underwater structures that Captain Tyler personally places, creating custom reefs that he marks via GPS. This allows access to exclusive offshore hotspots, or “honey holes,” for exceptional fishing.

An overnight trip offers the full advantage of this experience. Captain Tyler organizes trips ranging from 1 to 4 nights, accommodating up to 4 anglers per outing.

All journeys begin on the evening of the first day with an overnight run offshore. Fishing then continues from 5:00 AM until sundown, yielding approximately 12 hours of fishing on a 36-hour trip, 24 hours on a 60-hour trip, and 36 hours on an 84-hour trip. Afterward, you’ll spend the return voyage overnight and arrive back at the Quepos dock in time for breakfast.

Regardless of whether you select a 2-night or 4-night excursion, you’ll be well cared for aboard Captain Tyler’s 46′ Guthrie, built in North Carolina. Originally introduced to Costa Rica by the renowned fly fisherman Harry Gray, this vessel was purpose-built for fishing the thriving Pacific waters of the region. Notably, it is the last wood-hulled boat constructed by Guthrie and offers one of the finest fishing platforms available locally. The boat features a fully air-conditioned cabin, full bathroom, kitchen, two staterooms, and top-tier fishing amenities.

Equipped with advanced electronics from Garmin and Raymarine, Rupp Outriggers, Tuna Tubes, Live Well, and twin dredges, the boat is powered by a Detroit 8V92 engine, cruising comfortably at 20 knots.

Captain Tyler provides top-quality fishing gear, including Shimano TLD 30 and 50 class conventional reels, Penn 50 and 80 class conventional and spinning setups, plus fly fishing gear featuring Billy Pate reels and Sage rods for enthusiasts interested in that style.

If you’re seeking a fishing adventure with a near-guaranteed chance at catching Marlin, this trip is unmatched. While it demands stamina and commitment to reach these fertile fishing grounds, the payoff is extraordinary. Captain Tyler and his 46' Guthrie are dedicated to ensuring that your Quepos FAD trip surpasses any previous fishing experience you’ve had.
