About Your Guide

Introducing Captain Melvin, a veteran fisherman whose adventure on the water began back in 2000. Starting his career as a deckhand, Melvin steadily gained experience and demonstrated remarkable commitment, eventually rising to become a respected captain in the fishing world. Throughout the years, he has honed his skills in sportfishing, serving on premier charter vessels and helping both beginners and expert anglers land memorable catches. Today, as an independent operator, Captain Melvin offers over 20 years of ocean knowledge, keen intuition, and genuine enthusiasm on every outing.

Captain Melvin is proficient in a variety of fishing methods, such as:

  • Live bait trolling (Lliguin)
  • Popper fishing
  • Battle fishing
  • Casting
  • Light bait fishing
  • Bonito fishing (Cholin)
  • Tuna and billfish chasing
  • Fly fishing

Melvin and his crew provided an outstanding experience! Despite my husband breaking his leg just before our charter, they ensured he had a safe and enjoyable trip. I was thrilled to catch a sailfish—an absolutely amazing moment!

Embark from Quepos with Captain Melvin and dive into the excitement of offshore fishing in one of the planet’s premier sportfishing hotspots. With decades of hands-on experience and a friendly, approachable style, Captain Melvin tailors trips perfectly for anglers of all skill levels, making it especially welcoming for families. He’s enthusiastic about inspiring young anglers, so feel free to bring along children—just ensure they wear life vests, and confirm size availability beforehand.

Your adventure takes place on a 24-foot center console boat that comfortably seats up to four guests. This vessel comes fully equipped with essential gear, including GPS, a fishfinder, and high-quality rods, reels, and lures. Live bait is typically supplied, though occasionally you may have the chance to catch your own bait, adding extra fun to the experience. A bilingual First Mate is on board to provide help throughout the trip, from baiting hooks to cleaning your catch at day’s end. It’s customary and appreciated to tip the mate between 10 and 20%.

Trips last between six and eight hours, offering ample opportunity to target impressive offshore species like Mahi Mahi, Sailfish, Wahoo, Yellowfin Tuna, and all three types of Marlin — Blue, Black, and Striped. Whether you prefer trolling, jigging, spinning, popping, or fly fishing, Captain Melvin is equipped with the right techniques and tackle to ensure success. Enjoy the stunning scenery of Costa Rica’s central coast as you fish the productive waters and savor nonstop action.

Each outing includes fresh fruit, snacks, and a variety of beverages such as water, sodas, and beer. For longer trips, a lunch featuring sandwiches, salad, and chicken is provided to keep energy levels high. While the essentials are covered, it’s wise to bring your own hat, polarized sunglasses, and reef-safe sunscreen. Alcohol consumption is permitted in moderation—please avoid hard liquor and glass bottles to maintain safety.

If fly fishing is your goal, please note that equipment rentals come at an additional cost. Prior to the trip, ensure all participants have secured local fishing licenses, which can be obtained online or with assistance from the captain. Offering expert guidance, excellent fishing conditions, and a comfortable setup, a day on the water with Captain Melvin perfectly blends adventure and relaxation.
