His boat was exceptionally clean and well-maintained, and they were catching fish almost immediately. Another family with four kids, ranging from 7 to 17 years old, enjoyed a memorable trip with the Hooked Up team. Just off the coast of Fort Lauderdale, anglers have two popular trolling strategies to choose from: trolling the reefs to target Kingfish and Bonitos, or venturing offshore in pursuit of Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, Tunas, and occasionally Blue Marlin!

Trolling the Reef

Most bites—about 90%—come from the deeper lines. Captain Taco trolls with two planer boards, which carry the bait approximately 45 feet down, coupled with three baits skimming the surface, all at a steady speed of 5 to 6 knots.

When a Kingfish bites, it’s common for both deep rods to be struck simultaneously, as these fish travel in schools. Captain Taco will then navigate the boat in large circles around the initial strike zone, dragging the baits behind to provoke more bites. Ideally, each loop should bring another hit!

Trolling Offshore

Heading out offshore, Captain Taco increases the speed to cover more water, trolling 5 to 6 surface baits at 6 to 8 knots. He avoids using planer boards offshore because they add extra resistance, slowing the boat down. Instead, anything floating—weed patches, grass lines, or driftwood—becomes a hotspot where he’ll carefully run the baits in hopes of attracting fish.

Both reef and offshore trolling offer exciting opportunities, and there’s often time to try a bit of each. Whether you’re after inshore Kingfish or big offshore gamefish, a day with Captain Taco promises lively, engaging fishing action.

Unlike some of the more formal charters in Fort Lauderdale, Captain Taco’s trips aboard the "Hooked Up" are relaxed and fun. The captain and mate are friendly and interactive, encouraging you to party, chill out, or fish at your own pace. Their goal is to make your fishing experience the highlight of your time in Fort Lauderdale.

Every trip includes the Full-Service Package: an experienced captain and mate, all required fishing licenses, premium rods, reels, and tackle, plus a cooler stocked with ice to keep your beverages cold. Along the way, expect plenty of good humor and memorable moments!

Captain Taco recommends you bring your own food and drink, along with sunscreen, sunglasses, and a dash of luck for a great day on the water.
