One family shared their unforgettable day aboard Captain Taco's well-kept sportfishing boat. They were warmly welcomed by Taco and his crew and soon found themselves hooked up with a massive Amberjack. The trip continued with casts beneath colorful kites, resulting in catches of mahi-mahi, bonita, and a stunning sailfish. Everyone had a fantastic time, especially with Captain Taco leading the way, making it a trip they’re eager to repeat.
Another group described their outing with the Hooked Up team as fantastic, especially entertaining for their children aged 7 to 17. Off the coast of Fort Lauderdale, there are two popular trolling methods: targeting the reefs for Kingfish and Bonitos, and trolling offshore waters to catch Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, Tunas, and occasionally Blue Marlin.
About 90% of bites happen on the deep lines, so Captain Taco uses two planer boards to take baits roughly 45 feet down, while simultaneously running three baits skimming the surface at speeds of 5 to 6 knots.
When a Kingfish strikes, it’s common for both deep rods to be hit simultaneously, as these fish often travel in schools. Captain Taco then maneuvers the boat in wide circles, dragging the baits through the strike zone repeatedly. This technique usually results in multiple bites with each pass—at least that’s the goal!
Offshore trolling involves increasing the boat’s speed to cover more area, typically running 5 to 6 baits along the surface at 6 to 8 knots. Captain Taco prefers to avoid planer boards offshore because of the drag they create. Instead, he takes advantage of any floating debris he spots—whether it’s weed patches, grass lines, or driftwood—pulling baits past these spots to check for lurking fish.
Both reef and offshore trolling offer excellent fishing opportunities, and you might even have time to experience both during your trip. Regardless of which method you choose, fishing with Captain Taco in Fort Lauderdale guarantees a memorable adventure. Unlike some rigid, quiet charters, Captain Taco encourages a laid-back atmosphere where you can relax, party, or just enjoy your time out on the water.
