Boca Grande boasts a rich variety of fish species, but none offer the thrill and excitement quite like the Tarpon. Known as Florida’s top inshore gamefish, the Tarpon thrives here, making Boca Grande the ideal destination for a memorable fishing experience with Captain Chris.
Captain Chris has devoted much of his life to guiding anglers in their pursuit of the “Silver King.” Tarpon fishing is a proud family legacy, woven into his story from the very beginning. At just five years old, Chris landed his first Tarpon—an impressive 80-pounder—in the depths of Boca Grande Pass alongside his father, Mark. Remarkably, his mother, Cynthia, was also engaged in Tarpon fishing in the same waters while expecting him. On his charters, Captain Chris employs classic live bait techniques, commonly using Blue Crabs, Pass Crabs, Squirrelfish, and Jumbo Shrimp to attract these powerful fish.
His approach involves drifting live bait along the bottom and various water columns of the pass, aided by a transducer bottom machine to maintain precise line depth in the Tarpon’s “strike zone.” The bait is presented as naturally as possible by using extra-long leaders, heavy sinkers, and by skillfully steering the boat. This meticulous technique results in a remarkable success rate of over 90% on Tarpon charters, ensuring most clients experience the thrill of a catch—though, as with all fishing, nothing is certain.
Captain Chris fishes from his custom-made 21-foot Clearwater 2000CC bay boat, crafted to his specifications in 2019. This state-of-the-art vessel offers excellent maneuverability and ample space to fish comfortably. A shaded T-top provides relief on warm sunny days, and a built-in Bluetooth stereo lets you enjoy your favorite tunes while out on the water.
All necessary equipment, including rods, reels, bait, and tackle, is provided by Captain Chris. Anglers only need to bring sunscreen (please, no spray), suitable clothing, a cooler stocked with snacks and drinks, and a positive attitude for an enjoyable day on the water.
