Boca Grande boasts a diverse array of fish species, but none can rival the thrill and excitement brought by its true water champion: the Tarpon. Known as Florida’s top inshore gamefish, Tarpon fishing here is unmatched, especially when guided by Captain Chris!
Captain Chris has devoted much of his life to helping anglers land Tarpon, a tradition deeply rooted in his family. His journey began early—at just five years old, he caught his first Tarpon, an impressive 80-pounder, in the depths of Boca Grande Pass alongside his father, Mark. Remarkably, his connection to Tarpon fishing goes even further; his mother, Cynthia, was battling Tarpon in Boca Grande Pass while pregnant with him. Captain Chris uses classic live bait techniques during his charters to effectively target the “Silver King.” The favorite live baits include Blue Crabs, Pass Crabs, Squirrelfish, and Jumbo Shrimp.
Using a transducer bottom machine, live baits are carefully drifted along the pass’s bottom and throughout various water columns where Tarpon congregate. This approach demands continuous line depth adjustments to keep the bait within the “strike zone.” Presentation is key: employing extra-long leaders, heavy sinkers, and precise boat maneuvering ensures the bait appears natural. Thanks to these techniques, Captain Chris maintains an impressive success rate—over 90%—in getting clients hooked on Tarpon, though as with all fishing, no catches can be guaranteed.
Captain Chris runs his charters aboard a custom-built 21-foot Clearwater 2000CC bay boat, designed to his specifications and launched in 2019. This modern craft offers excellent drift capabilities and nimble handling, complemented by ample fishing space and a shaded T-top to provide relief from the summer sun. For added enjoyment, the boat includes a Bluetooth stereo system, so you’re welcome to bring your favorite tunes along for the trip.
All essential gear is provided by Captain Chris, including rods, reels, bait, and tackle. Anglers need only bring sunscreen (please no sprays), appropriate clothing, a cooler stocked with snacks and beverages, and a cheerful attitude for an unforgettable fishing adventure.
