Your Guide: Karl T.

About Your Guide

Some individuals seem destined for fishing from the very start—Captain Karl is a perfect example. At just three years old, without any guidance, he asked for a net and a bucket, marking the beginning of his lifelong passion. While other children watched cartoons, Karl was captivated by Saturday morning fishing shows. One particular episode about the Florida Keys sparked a passion that never faded, inspiring him to pursue fishing in those crystal-clear waters.

Karl’s first hands-on experience in the Keys was during his teenage years at Sea Base, a Boy Scouts camp situated on the islands. Soon after, receiving a college acceptance letter from a Florida school gave him the ideal reason to head south. Between his studies, he chased after every fish species he had admired on television growing up, and he quickly discovered that sharing those adventures brought him as much happiness as catching the fish themselves.

After graduating, Karl obtained his captain’s license and returned to work at Sea Base, before moving on to one of the premier backcountry and flats fishing operations in the Lower Keys. With hundreds of fishing trips completed and often spending more days on the water than anyone else around, he refined his expertise and built a strong reputation for providing remarkable fishing experiences.

Now, at the helm of his own charter, Captain Karl focuses on placing anglers in the ideal spot at just the right time, ensuring an unforgettable outing. Whether you’re a beginner casting on the flats for the first time or pursuing your next big trophy, Karl’s deep knowledge, enthusiasm, and local expertise guarantee a memorable adventure. Everything went smoothly. The weather was perfect, too. Truly excellent! Engaging and fun. We'll be back!

Experience the heart of the Florida Keys with Captain Karl on a private fishing expedition through the backcountry and flats. Whether you're sight fishing the shallow, clear Atlantic flats or navigating the tranquil, sheltered waters of the Gulf-side backcountry, this adventure offers some of the most exhilarating light-tackle fishing available anywhere in the world.

On the flats, you’ll explore shallow waters ranging from just 1 to 4 feet deep as Captain Karl skillfully poles the skiff into perfect fishing spots. This quiet, thrilling approach lets you target iconic species such as Tarpon, Permit, and Bonefish, while also encountering Barracuda, Jacks, Ladyfish, Sharks, and Cobia. The backcountry portion takes you around secluded mangrove islands in calm, protected waters, ideal for anglers sensitive to seasickness or when offshore conditions are rough.

Your fishing platform is a 16-foot Dolphin Super Skiff, a craft renowned for its shallow-water capabilities, blending comfort with performance. Equipped with a Mercury outboard motor and advanced Simrad electronics, it’s optimized for slipping through skinny water and managing choppy conditions. With space for up to two anglers, this boat is designed to deliver a personal and interactive fishing experience.

Choose from 4-, 6-, or 8-hour trips, depending on how deeply you want to engage with the fishing action. All fishing gear—including rods, reels, tackle—and expert local guidance are provided; you simply need to bring essentials like sun protection, snacks, and beverages.

Whether your goal is to land a bucket-list fish or simply soak in the stunning beauty of the Keys’ backcountry, Captain Karl will guide you to the best spots for a safe, exciting, and memorable day on the water.
