Captain Mike hails from Baltimore, Maryland, and spent his childhood in Westminster. His fishing journey began at the tender age of four, casting lines into a small stream behind his home. Growing up in Maryland offered him countless fishing adventures across ponds, streams, lakes, the Atlantic Ocean, and notably the Chesapeake Bay.
Originally trained as an electrician, Mike's life took an unexpected turn at 26 when a severe accident saw him fall 30 feet through a roof, breaking his neck. After a fortunate recovery and intensive rehabilitation, Mike embraced a new appreciation for life, determined to make the most of every single day.
Channeling his deep passion for the water, Mike transitioned careers, mastering scuba diving and eventually becoming an instructor. His love for fishing and diving led him to Islamorada in the Florida Keys, where he managed a dive shop. Soon after, he purchased an offshore boat and launched a fishing charter business.
Mike realized how much he enjoyed sharing his fishing knowledge and passion with others. Meeting new people and spending days under the vast open sky surrounded by water became the perfect office for him. Among all species, sailfish captured his heart, and his commitment saw him consistently place in the top three in local fishing tournaments.
After discovering the thrill of backcountry and flats fishing, Mike sold his offshore boat to become a full-time guide specializing in these environments. His skills earned him numerous tournament victories, and he continues to guide anglers in backcountry waters today.
Over his career, Mike has had the privilege of guiding a diverse array of clients, including former presidents, athletes, actors, and senators, all while gathering countless unforgettable stories and experiences. These adventures led him to join The American Outdoorsman as a proud member of their pro staff, eager to share his expertise and enthusiasm.
With over four decades of guiding under his belt, Mike made a remarkable recovery from his accident, showing no signs of it today. Grateful for every moment, he continues to live life with full vigor.
Captain Mike operates three boats—a 22-foot Pathfinder, a 19-foot Action Craft, and a 22-foot Triton—from Robbie’s Marina in Islamorada, Florida Keys (mile marker 77.5). Supported by two fellow captains, he offers a variety of fishing charters, including half-day (4 hours), three-quarter day (6 hours), and full-day (8 hours) trips in the stunning backcountry and ocean flats.
Families and children are warmly welcomed, and a selection of fly rods and spinning gear is available to help anglers target bonefish, tarpon, sharks, permit, snapper, snook, trout, and redfish.
