About Your Guide

Captain Alex is an expert in fly fishing for Bonefish, Permit, Tarpon, Redfish, Snook, and Sharks throughout the stunning and abundant flats of the Florida Keys. Fly fishing is his preferred technique, and he provides tailored instruction and guidance to help you reach your fishing goals, regardless of your experience level. Additionally, he offers lessons in fly casting to enhance your skills.

However, it’s essential to dedicate ample time to practicing your casting before your trip or to work with a casting professional to ensure you make the most of your time on the water. The fish in the Keys are known for being big, cautious, and challenging to catch. Be prepared, as things can often go wrong if you’re not ready. Anyone who says otherwise isn’t being truthful. Captain Alex guarantees opportunities to catch fish, but success demands that you bring your best effort. Skillful execution is critical, so focus on practicing extensively prior to your charter.

Late winter through spring are Captain Alex’s favorite seasons, as this is when Tarpon migration peaks and the fish begin moving through the backcountry, passes, inlets, and coastal areas of the Keys. While springtime offers the highest concentrations of fish, Tarpon can be found year-round in various locations. Captain Alex stresses that fly fishing for Tarpon is highly addictive. "When you spot a school of Tarpon cruising over clear water or see one motionless just beneath the surface, you’ll understand what I mean. Then, you make your cast, the fish tracks your fly, takes it in, and bursts away, leaping and spinning while pulling hundreds of yards of line from your reel. After that, you’re hooked for life."

He advises anglers to be proficient in casting before arriving. "If you’ve never handled a 10, 11, or 12 weight fly rod, please don’t come to the dock trying to learn on the spot while the fish are present. Even if you fish occasionally, it won’t be enough preparation. You risk wasting valuable time and money. Take months or at least weeks to practice casting beforehand. You should be able to double haul, generate sufficient line speed, and cast accurately. Developing a strong backhand cast greatly improves your chances."

The Keys typically experience winds of 10 to 15 knots, with stronger gusts of 15 to 20 knots or more often occurring. Since fishing tends to improve in windier conditions, mastering casting in the wind is crucial. Numerous books and online resources cover fly casting and Tarpon fishing techniques, offering a wealth of knowledge. Investing in lessons from a skilled casting instructor is money well spent. The same preparation applies to other prized flats species like Permit and Bonefish, which are equally—if not more—difficult and demanding to catch.

One angler shared, "I had an amazing trip with Alex. He helped me target several fish, and I landed my first snook, measuring 33 inches! He’s incredibly knowledgeable and genuinely passionate about what he does."
