About Your Guide

Nate is your go-to expert for fly fishing adventures across Montana. Alongside his experienced team, he travels widely throughout the state and nearby areas, targeting abundant populations of Rainbow and Brown Trout. The team operates out of multiple Montana locations including Bozeman, West Yellowstone, Ennis, Helena, Cascade, Three Forks, and Cameron, guiding anglers on the Madison, Missouri, Yellowstone, Gallatin, Jefferson, Ruby, Firehole, Gibbon, Lamar, and Bighorn Rivers. Additionally, they offer guided fly fishing excursions on Holter, Hebgen, and Ennis Lakes, as well as Soda Butte and Slough Creek. Access to prime fishing spots within the famed Yellowstone National Park is also part of their services.

Nate’s connection to Montana runs deep, tracing back to the late 19th century when his great-great-grandfather settled in Billings after working as a cook on a cattle drive. Although fishing is in his heritage, Nate began fly fishing at the age of 13, which sparked his lifelong passion for the sport. He spent his youth exploring rivers like the Bighorn, Yellowstone, Stillwater, and Boulder. Nate started his guiding career in 1999 while attending Montana State University and has more than two decades of experience sharing his expertise with clients. Teaching newcomers and mentoring aspiring guides is something he truly values.

Whether working with anglers aged 8 or 90, individuals with disabilities or life-threatening illnesses, families, or large groups, Nate finds joy in creating memorable fishing experiences for everyone. He believes strongly in equipping people with the skills needed to fully enjoy their time on the water, making lasting memories for his clients and himself alike.

Currently, Nate is a single dad raising his two daughters, Emily and Elizabeth, in Bozeman. Each day, he travels to the fishing spots he knows so well and looks forward to sharing those beautiful waters with you, your family, or friends. By selecting your preferred date, group size, trip length, and start time, you can look forward to an unforgettable day fishing Montana’s waters with Nate.

One guest shared their incredible experience fishing with Nate’s guide Patrick, describing him as a consummate professional who made the day fun and instructive for beginners. Thanks to Patrick’s local knowledge of the Madison River, the group enjoyed multiple catches including brown and rainbow trout as well as whitefish. For these anglers, the catch was just part of the rewarding experience.

Another trip highlight was fishing the Yellowstone River from a drift boat—a must-have experience for any fly fishing enthusiast. Nathan, the guide, demonstrated over three decades of expertise on those waters, patiently teaching the basics of fly fishing while patiently navigating the river’s rhythms. The day included experimenting with various fly patterns, particularly large grasshopper imitations which prompted a wide range of interesting fish behaviors. Though it took some time to master the technique, the anglers gained skills they planned to use on future trips.

As the day progressed, Nathan switched tactics to a nymph rig with an indicator, targeting more guaranteed catches. His patience and good humor shone through as he helped even novice anglers land fish, all while making sure the day was enjoyable despite the occasional fishing challenges. The comfort and safety of fishing from the drift boat allowed guests to cast confidently and absorb Nathan’s wealth of knowledge about the boat’s handling and the local waterways.

Montana’s public fishing access impressed visitors, earning high praise for openness and well-maintained waters. Guests expressed gratitude to Nathan for his dedication and thorough communication before and after their trips. From initial booking to the final catch, the fishing adventures delivered a professional, memorable, and rewarding experience.

Many clients have commented on the hard work and expertise of Nate’s guides, such as Drew, Will, Ryan, Matt, and Shelly, who consistently adapt to conditions and ensure clients encounter plenty of fish. No matter the weather or water temperature, these guides row tirelessly, explore varied fishing spots, and adjust tactics to keep the action going. First-timers and seasoned anglers alike appreciate the guidance, patience, and camaraderie these professionals provide.

Whether it’s casting on the Madison, drifting the Missouri, or exploring any of Montana’s incredible rivers, Nate and his team offer outstanding service and a commitment to creating lifelong memories. Their passion for fly fishing shines through every trip, making each outing exceptional regardless of the number of fish caught.

Embark on an exhilarating adventure across the waters with one of our expert guides for an unforgettable day of fly-fishing in Montana! This trip centers around exploring Holter Lake, where you’ll target both Brown Trout and Rainbow Trout while maneuvering your way across the lake with the help of a jet boat.

Upper Holter Lake, situated just 20 minutes north of Helena, Montana, is renowned primarily for its abundant Rainbow Trout population, with fish typically measuring between 18″ and 20″. Anglers can also look forward to encountering Brown Trout, which can reach impressive sizes of 30″ or more. This lake offers fantastic “Gulper” fishing experiences akin to those found in Hebgen and Ennis Lakes.

During this full-day excursion, a U.S. Coast Guard-certified crew member will expertly pilot the jet boat to navigate Holter Lake, pinpointing the hotspots where trout are actively feeding. This method provides exclusive access to deeper or more hazardous waters that aren’t suitable for wading. Once positioned, your guide will share valuable fly-fishing tips and give you a chance to cast your line. Whether you’re a beginner or seasoned angler, your guide is dedicated to helping you land some impressive catches.

Wherever you’re staying in Montana—be it Bozeman, Ennis, Cameron, Helena, Livingston, West Yellowstone, or Fort Smith—Nate or one of his trusted guides will arrange your pickup from your vacation rental, lodge, hotel, campsite, or even the airport. If your accommodation is off the beaten path, simply coordinate a meeting point that’s convenient for your day on the water.

Your guide will supply everything needed for a successful day: rods, reels, flies, and tippet. Guests will also enjoy a delicious lunch prepared by the crew. Should you require waders and wading boots, these can be rented at an additional fee; please inform us when booking. All you need to bring is a valid Montana fishing license. For comfort and safety, a hat, sunscreen, polarized sunglasses, and a rain jacket are strongly recommended. Get ready to make the most of your time on the water with professional guidance every step of the way.

We offer several jet boat trip options in nearby locations around Bozeman and Yellowstone National Park. To ensure you have the best possible fishing experience, our guides may suggest an alternative lake or river if conditions are more promising elsewhere. Whether you choose to stick with Holter Lake or explore other spots, you can book your jet boat trip here and our team will contact you to finalize the details!
