About Your Guide

Nate serves as your comprehensive resource for fly fishing throughout Montana. He and his team travel extensively to locations teeming with Rainbow and Brown Trout, which covers nearly the entire state and surrounding areas. Operating from several Montana towns—including Bozeman, West Yellowstone, Ennis, Helena, Cascade, Three Forks, and Cameron—Nate guides anglers on renowned rivers such as the Madison, Missouri, Yellowstone, Gallatin, Jefferson, Ruby, Firehole, Gibbon, Lamar, and Bighorn. Additionally, he offers expertly guided fly fishing excursions on lakes like Holter, Hebgen, and Ennis, as well as Soda Butte and Slough Creek streams. His team even has exclusive access to the iconic Yellowstone National Park fishing spots.

Nate’s connection to Montana reaches back to the late 19th century when his great-great-grandfather chose to settle in Billings after working as a cook on a cattle drive through the region. Although fishing is deeply rooted in his heritage, Nate himself first cast a fly rod at age 13, marking the beginning of his lifelong passion for the sport. His early fishing adventures involved frequenting the Bighorn, Yellowstone, Stillwater, and Boulder rivers. Starting his guiding career in 1999 while studying at Montana State University, Nate has now been leading anglers for over two decades. He takes great pride in mentoring new guides and sharing his extensive knowledge.

Nate treasures the meaningful experiences he’s shared with a wide range of clients—from youngsters as young as 8 to seniors up to 90, including families, large groups, and individuals with disabilities or chronic illnesses. He emphasizes the value of teaching clients the skills necessary to maximize their enjoyment of fly fishing, creating memories that endure well beyond the day on the water. A devoted single father, Nate lives in Bozeman with his two daughters, Emily and Elizabeth. He commutes regularly to the various fishing spots and eagerly anticipates guiding you, your loved ones, and friends to unforgettable fishing adventures.

When planning your trip, just provide your preferred date, group size, trip length, and start time to join Nate for a memorable day casting flies together. Your guide can adjust the meeting place according to your convenience. Although Nate offers lodging options for your stay, these accommodations are separate from the guiding fees. Please mention any lodging requests in the notes during booking, or refer to the local hotels and VRBO listings available nearby.

Clients frequently praise the professionalism and expertise of Nate’s guides. One such experience described a day with guide Patrick on the Madison River, highlighting Patrick’s approachable teaching style and ability to help beginners land several trout and whitefish. Another memorable trip involved fishing the Yellowstone River from a drift boat, where guide Nathan’s 35 years of fishing knowledge and patient instruction made the outing both enjoyable and educational for novice anglers. He skillfully adapted techniques throughout the day, focusing on hopper patterns, dropper rigs, and nymph setups to keep the fish biting despite the seasonal challenges and visitor traffic. Both guides maintain a friendly, safety-conscious environment that encourages learning and fun.

Clients emphasize Nathan’s commitment to courteous river etiquette and his professionalism as a guide who consistently strives to place anglers on fish. Many have expressed eagerness to return to Montana’s vast public waters, impressed by the fishing access and quality guiding services. The combination of beautiful landscapes, rich wildlife sightings, and top-notch instruction ensures a world-class fly fishing experience.

Across multiple rivers like the Missouri and Madison, Nate’s guides continuously work hard to keep clients engaged, changing fly patterns and river positions to maximize fish encounters. Praise extends to guides who not only demonstrate exceptional fishing skills but also foster engaging conversations and a welcoming atmosphere. Whether booking on short notice or planning in advance, Nate and his team deliver a seamless and satisfying trip experience, marked by thoughtful communication and personalized attention.

First-time fly fishermen and veterans alike have benefited from the knowledgeable guidance, with many noting the excitement of catching their initial Rainbow Trout on a fly rod and the overall enjoyment that extends beyond simply the number of fish caught. The combination of scenic drift boat fishing, expert instruction, and patient support makes these outings stand out among guided trips nationwide.

In summary, if you’re seeking a professional guide service in Montana renowned for its dedication, skill, and outstanding customer care, Nate and his crew offer an unforgettable fly fishing experience that blends tradition, expertise, and genuine hospitality into every day on the water.
