Nate is your premier destination for fly fishing adventures throughout Montana. He and his team travel extensively to pursue Rainbow and Brown Trout, which inhabit nearly every corner of the state and neighboring areas. Based out of multiple locations including Bozeman, West Yellowstone, Ennis, Helena, Cascade, Three Forks, and Cameron, Montana, Nate guides anglers on renowned rivers such as the Madison, Missouri, Yellowstone, Gallatin, Jefferson, Ruby, Firehole, Gibbon, Lamar, and Bighorn. Additionally, he offers expert-guided fly fishing outings on lakes like Holter, Hebgen, and Ennis, as well as excursions to Soda Butte and Slough Creek. His outfit also holds exclusive access within the iconic Yellowstone National Park.
Nate’s Montana roots run deep, tracing back to the late 1800s when his great-great-grandfather settled in Billings after working as a cook on a cattle drive. Although fishing was a family legacy, Nate himself didn’t cast his first fly rod until he was 13 years old—a moment he credits with sparking a lifelong passion. He spent his youth exploring waters like the Bighorn, Yellowstone, Stillwater, and Boulder rivers, and began guiding in 1999 while pursuing studies at Montana State University. Over two decades later, Nate continues to share his expertise and delights in mentoring upcoming guides. The joy of introducing anglers ranging from 8 to 90 years old, including those with disabilities, health challenges, families, and large groups, keeps him motivated. Nate expresses, “Teaching essential skills to help clients maximize their fly fishing experience and create lasting memories means everything to me.”
Residing in Bozeman as a single father, Nate shares his home with his daughters, Emily and Elizabeth. Every day, he eagerly travels to the fishing spots where he guides, ready to explore those waters alongside you, your family, and friends. Simply provide your preferred date, group size, trip length, and starting time to embark on an unforgettable fishing day with Nate.
Please note that lodging options suggested by Nate are not included in trip pricing. If interested in accommodations, mention your preference in the “notes” section at checkout or consult local maps for nearby hotels and vacation rentals.
Our day fishing with Patrick, one of Nate’s skilled guides, was truly memorable. Patrick’s professionalism and straightforward teaching style made it enjoyable for novices. Although the thrill of catching fish was secondary to the overall experience, we landed several trout and whitefish thanks to Patrick’s wide knowledge of the Madison River.
I was especially eager to drift boat fish on the Yellowstone—a chance I was fortunate to seize. Despite being relatively new to fly fishing, Nathan was a patient and technically adept guide with over 35 years’ experience on these rivers. His calm demeanor and expertise made the day both relaxing and educational. We focused on hopper patterns, mimicking the abundant grasshoppers on the riverbanks, trying various techniques to entice fish reactions ranging from aggressive strikes to subtle inspections. By day’s end, I had hooked several small rainbows, while my companion brought in a couple of beautiful native whitefish. Nathan’s willingness to adapt techniques and patiently coach us made all the difference.
Fishing from the drift boat was comfortable and safe, especially appreciated by my partner who enjoyed casting while standing on the boat’s leaning post. Our guides continually adjusted their approach to keep us on the fish amid busy weekend river traffic, and Nathan’s calm professionalism ensured the day remained pleasant despite occasional river congestion.
This trip also highlighted Montana’s exceptional public water access, which ranks among the best we’ve experienced worldwide. Obviously, Nathan’s dedication to being a gracious and skilled guide added immense value, making the day one of our all-time favorite fishing adventures. We are grateful to the entire team for their excellent communication and organizational support throughout the booking and guiding process.
Feedback from other adventures with Nate’s crew further confirms the high calibre of service. From action-packed days on the Missouri and Madison Rivers to patient, engaging guidance tailored for beginners and veterans alike, their passion and expertise shine through. Whether navigating fast currents or tranquil waters, their commitment to adapting strategies keeps clients on the catch and ensures enjoyable, rewarding outings.
Overall, fishing with Nate and his team guarantees a professional yet welcoming experience, perfect for anyone eager to explore Montana’s legendary waterways and create lifelong memories on the water.
