Your Guide: Derwyn B.

About Your Guide

Derwyn has been passionate about fishing his entire life. He started deep sea fishing in the early 1990s, instantly captivated by the thrill of the open ocean and the challenge of landing large fish. By the mid-90s, he stepped into his role as a captain, and in 2005, he expanded his expertise by acquiring a commercial reef fish license, adding commercial fishing to his professional background.

Over the years, Capt Derwyn has captained several vessels, including a 30-foot Rampage Sportsfisher, a 28-foot True World, a 26-foot Everglades, a 33-foot World Cat, and a 23-foot Hydrasport Bay Bolt. Currently, he runs his Glacier Bay Ocean Runner. He possesses extensive knowledge of numerous excellent fishing spots across the Gulf of Mexico, including many secret, unpublished locations.

Derwyn’s love for the outdoors goes well beyond deep sea fishing. You might find him bass or crappie fishing at Sam Rayburn Lake or catfish trot lining. At times, he’s spotted near the Arkansas River, indulging in fly fishing, which has become his top fishing passion. He is also an avid waterfowler, having pursued ducks and geese since the early 1960s and even operating a waterfowl outfitting business in Saskatchewan, Canada, from 2008 to 2017.

Driven by a strong work ethic and enthusiasm for outdoor life, Derwyn launched an online retail fish and outdoor gear store in 1998, which he successfully ran for 22 years before selling it in 2020. With those ventures behind him, he now dedicates all his efforts fully to his fishing charter and commercial fishing enterprises.

Guests frequently commend the experience: calm seas, pleasant weather, and knowledgeable captains keeping clients right on the fish. Many appreciate the friendly, professional crew who ensure trips run on time and provide excellent opportunities for catching prized species like bull redfish. Positive reviews mention kids having a blast and the joy of catching plenty of fish, praising captains for their local expertise.

On the other hand, there are honest reviews that recount less successful outings. For example, some trips involve long journeys offshore with only a few catches, which can be discouraging when expectations are high. Fishing is inherently unpredictable, and despite extensive experience and careful planning, sometimes the fish simply don’t cooperate. While such trips can be disappointing, captains always aim to maximize every opportunity, shifting locations as needed to improve chances.

Capt Derwyn respects every customer's feedback and shares that zero-catch days are a natural part of fishing, emphasizing that persistence and knowledge result in many memorable trips over time. He explains that target species such as king mackerel feed in cycles, and conditions vary daily. His team constantly scouts for promising features like weedlines or floating debris that attract various species, including mahi and cobia, to enhance trip success.

Moreover, captains often adapt strategies mid-trip, returning closer to shore for strong species like bull redfish and blacktip sharks to salvage the experience. This approach frequently turns the tide, allowing guests to enjoy exciting and productive fishing even when offshore prospects are slim.

Ultimately, even the most skilled captains face challenging days. Despite this, Capt Derwyn and his crew are committed to providing exceptional effort and making every outing worthwhile. They maintain transparent communication and encourage guests to reach out for another trip to improve their chances and enjoy the full adventure of fishing under better conditions.

We value your trust and feedback and strive to ensure each trip creates great memories and the best chances to reel in trophy fish. Please don’t hesitate to contact us for future excursions where we’ll aim to deliver an outstanding experience every time.
