It was an incredible outing with two boats. Captain Chris’s vessel was perfectly suited for the experience. Considering the cost, it’s hard to find a better fishing charter option in Charleston. The second boat accompanying us was just as well-appointed. Comfort was key; we relaxed on beanbags at the stern, enjoying drinks as we headed about 40 miles offshore. Before departure, the guides delivered a comprehensive safety briefing and took every possible precaution to ensure our well-being. They successfully balanced fun with safety.
They were knowledgeable about fishing regulations, including season restrictions and size limits for keeper fish. On our very first drop, we quickly hooked two impressive red snapper. When the bite slowed, we continued exploring various spots, filling our cooler with vermillion and other delicious fish. We even caught several sharks over five feet in length, which was thrilling for the young angler in our group.
Despite encountering some weather challenges, the guides seamlessly adjusted our plans to keep the adventure going. We decided to fish deeper waters to avoid an approaching thunderstorm, extending our fishing time by a few extra hours — a welcome bonus for everyone. The highlight came as we chummed to attract a feeding frenzy of cobia near the surface right before heading back to the marina. Topwater fishing for cobia is an unforgettable experience, and although a massive cobia was nearly landed, it was dramatically taken by an impressive 8-foot shark just feet from the boat. The raw energy of the moment overshadowed the loss, creating unforgettable memories.
