Your Guide: Derwyn B.

About Your Guide

Derwyn's passion for fishing spans his entire life. Starting with deep-sea fishing in the early 1990s, he was instantly captivated by the thrill of the open ocean and the challenge of landing massive fish. His journey as a captain kicked off in the mid-90s, and by 2005, he expanded his expertise by acquiring a commercial reef fish license, adding commercial fishing to his credentials. Over the years, Capt Derwyn has managed an array of vessels, including a 30 Rampage Sportsfisher, a 28-foot True World, a 26-foot Everglades, a 33-foot World Cat, a 23-foot Hydrasport Bay Bolt, and currently, the Glacier Bay Ocean Runner.

He possesses an extensive knowledge of excellent fishing locations throughout the Gulf of Mexico, including several secret spots known only to a few. But Derwyn's love for the outdoors is not limited to deep-sea adventures. You might find him fishing for bass or white perch (crappie) at Sam Rayburn Lake or setting trot lines for catfish. On other days, you might spot his truck by the Arkansas River, dedicated to fly fishing, which has become his top fishing passion. Additionally, he’s an avid waterfowler, active since the early 1960s, and has even operated a waterfowl guiding business in Saskatchewan, Canada from 2008 to 2017.

His strong work ethic and enthusiasm for outdoor activities led him to launch an online retail shop in 1998, which he successfully ran for 22 years before selling it in June 2020. With his outfitting and retail businesses now behind him, he focuses entirely on his fishing charter and commercial fishing ventures.

Customer testimonials highlight smooth sailing, well-timed fishing spots, and plenty of memorable catches. Many praise the knowledgeable and friendly captains who ensure an enjoyable experience for anglers of all ages — from seasoned fishers to kids having their first big catch. Captains are known for their professionalism and dedication, keeping lines baited and spirits high even when the catch is unpredictable.

Of course, fishing isn’t always a sure thing. One less enthusiastic review pointed out a lengthy trip with limited success, highlighting the reality that sometimes the fish just don’t bite. While this is disappointing, Capt Derwyn explains that fishing outcomes can be unpredictable despite the best planning and experience. Having been in the business since the 90s, he has encountered many trips with no catch at all — "zero trips" are part of the sport, even for the most skilled anglers.

On trips where the targeted species are nearby but elusive, the captain continuously scouts for promising conditions like weed lines, anchored vessels, or floating debris, which can attract fish such as cobia, mahi-mahi, and various others. When fishing conditions seem unfavorable, he will often suggest shifting focus to nearshore species such as bull redfish and blacktip sharks, which tend to provide exciting action and higher success rates.

Overall, the best captains understand and navigate the ups and downs of fishing, balancing effort and expectation. Though not every outing results in a full limit, guests often walk away with great stories, quality catches, and memorable experiences. Capt Derwyn and his crew dedicate themselves fully to making every trip enjoyable and successful when possible, and they welcome the opportunity to book your next adventure with better conditions and bigger catches.

This extended trip encompasses all the species targeted during our 6- and 8-hour trips, such as Snapper and Kingfish. The extra time allows us to explore deeper waters and fish around surface structures like weedlines, shrimp boats, and buoys when they are present. With additional fishing time, this trip increases the chances of filling your catch limits, landing a variety of species, and catching larger fish. Please note, no sharks are permitted onboard.
