Alex’s love for fishing began in Northern Michigan where he spent his youth angling for Salmon and Steelhead, igniting a lifelong passion for both fishing and the outdoors. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science and Biology from Northern Michigan University. After gaining experience in Chemical Engineering and Pharmaceutical Research, Alex discovered that guiding fishing trips was his true passion. In 2017, he made a life-changing decision to relocate to Colorado’s Western Slope, where he now guides on the renowned waters of the Gunnison River. Alex divides his time among Michigan, Colorado, and Florida, offering not only fishing excursions but also Big Game and Turkey hunting adventures. Your guide can accommodate your preferred starting point.
“An excellent day! Alex possesses extensive knowledge about the river and the fish species, and he is an exceptionally skilled boat captain. He is friendly, easygoing, and patient. Plus, he prepares a wonderful split pea and ham soup. I’m definitely coming back for another trip.” – Tom Johnson

From November through May, large numbers of Steelhead migrate from Lake Michigan into various rivers along Michigan’s west coast. These striking chrome-colored fish spawn in late spring before returning to the lake, repeating this cycle for 8 to 10 years. Known for their aggressive nature, Steelhead vigorously protect their body weight, making them eager to strike at egg flies or spawn sacks.
Alex and his team of guides focus on targeting these impressive fish in some of the most productive rivers located south of Traverse City, MI. They employ both fly fishing and spinning methods to maximize success. As spring arrives and temperatures rise, Steelhead are commonly found in deep pools, over gravel beds, and within flowing runs. Anglers using flies have success with nymphs and streamers, while spinner anglers often use spawn bags and spinners. Although the weather can be unpredictable during this season, the thrill of landing a beautiful Steelhead makes the experience incredibly rewarding.
Full-day trips include a hot lunch served by the streamside. Please notify your guide in advance of any dietary restrictions or special requests to ensure your needs are met.
