Alex’s love for fishing began during his childhood in Northern Michigan, where he frequently fished for Salmon and Steelhead. This early experience ignited a lifelong enthusiasm for angling and outdoor adventures. He pursued his education at Northern Michigan University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science and Biology. Initially, Alex worked in Chemical Engineering and later in Pharmaceutical Research, but he soon discovered that his true passion was guiding fishing trips.
In 2017, Alex made the bold decision to change careers and relocated to Colorado’s Western Slope. He now guides anglers on the renowned Gunnison River, famous for its exceptional fishing opportunities. Currently, Alex divides his time between Michigan, Colorado, and Florida, where he offers guidance not only for fishing excursions but also for Big Game and Turkey hunting adventures.
Please note that the accommodations offered by Alex are not included in the trip price. If you wish to arrange lodging, kindly mention it in the “notes” section during booking. Alternatively, you can review the map below for nearby hotels and vacation rental options.
“Had an excellent day! Alex is incredibly knowledgeable about the river and fish species, as well as a very skilled boat captain. He is friendly, patient, and personable, and he even whipped up a delicious bowl of split pea and ham soup. I look forward to booking another trip with him.” – Tom Johnson

From late August through early October, King and Coho Salmon journey from Lake Michigan into numerous rivers along Michigan’s west coast. Captain Alex is an expert in fly fishing for these salmon on secluded upper sections of the Betsie River and Little Bear Creek, located south of Traverse City. Thanks to private access, we navigate river stretches off-limits to most anglers, offering stunning scenic floats where bald eagles are frequently spotted in greater numbers than fellow fishermen. Combine this with abundant fish populations, and you have the perfect formula for an unforgettable day on the water!
Each season, these river sections are cleared of major obstructions early on to enable safe downstream travel. However, vegetation is intentionally left dense to maintain a thriving trout habitat and discourage other boats from using the stretch. As a result, you might find yourself pushing the boat over sandbars, sliding under fallen logs, or moving through brush—which only enhances the adventure!
Captain Alex focuses on salmon early in their run when they are fresh, aggressive, and waiting in large pools. The most effective approach involves bottom bouncing using egg flies, wooly buggers, or egg-sucking leeches. On select days, stripping streamers can also produce excellent results.
If preferred, spinning gear is available for casting thundersticks or floating skein beneath a bobber; just confirm with your guide ahead of time to ensure this option. A hearty lunch is provided on the riverbank during all full-day excursions. All you need to bring is a positive attitude and your Michigan fishing license!
