About Your Guide

Nate is your premier resource for fly fishing adventures across Montana. Alongside his team, he travels to prime spots where Rainbow and Brown Trout thrive, covering nearly every corner of the state and beyond. Based in Bozeman, West Yellowstone, Ennis, Helena, Cascade, Three Forks, and Cameron, Montana, Nate's crew fishes well-known rivers such as the Madison, Missouri, Yellowstone, Gallatin, Jefferson, Ruby, Firehole, Gibbon, Lamar, and Bighorn. They also provide expertly guided fly fishing excursions on lakes like Holter, Hebgen, and Ennis, as well as on Soda Butte and Slough Creek. Additionally, Nate's team can access some of the most legendary fishing locations within Yellowstone National Park.

With family roots in Montana stretching back to the late 1800s—when his great-great-grandfather settled in Billings after working as a cook on a cattle drive—fishing runs deep in Nate's heritage. Although he didn't pick up his first fly rod until the age of 13, that moment sparked a lifelong passion for the sport. Nate spent his youth exploring rivers such as the Bighorn, Yellowstone, Stillwater, and Boulder and began guiding clients in 1999 while attending Montana State University. Over two decades later, Nate continues to guide fly fishing enthusiasts, sharing his vast experience and helping mentor the next generation of guides. He treasures the opportunity to work with anglers of all ages, from children as young as eight up to seniors of 90, including those facing disabilities or serious illnesses, as well as families and large groups.

According to Nate, “Teaching clients the skills they need to fully enjoy their fly fishing trip is crucial to creating lifelong memories not just for them, but for me as well.” He currently resides in Bozeman as a single dad to two young daughters, Emily and Elizabeth. Nate looks forward to sharing the joy of Montana's waters with you, your family, and friends. Simply provide your preferred date, group size, trip length, and desired start time to plan an unforgettable day on the water. He is also flexible about starting locations to accommodate your convenience.

Clients rave about their time with Nate’s guides. For instance, one memorable trip with guide Patrick on the Madison River combined professionalism with approachable teaching, enabling beginners to land multiple Rainbow and Brown Trout, as well as whitefish. Another angler’s drift boat experience on the Yellowstone River highlighted Nathan’s 35 years of expertise, patience, and friendly guidance, turning novices into confident casters using topwater techniques. The day also involved switch-ups to nymph rigs ensuring everyone enjoyed catching fish. The humor and camaraderie shared along the way made the day even more enjoyable.

Visitors appreciate the quality of guiding services combined with Montana's excellent public access to its rivers. Many compare it favorably to other renowned fishing destinations, praising not only the fishing but also the safety and comfort provided by the guides, such as the skilled handling of drift boats. Nathan’s professionalism and dedication stand out, contributing to seamless and memorable fly fishing outings.

Many guests have praised Nate's coordination and communication from start to finish. Whether fishing the Madison, Missouri, or Yellowstone rivers, guides like Drew, Will, Ryan, Matt, and Shelly consistently put clients on the best fish, adapting techniques and locations throughout the day to maximize success despite varying conditions. Friendly, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic, Nate’s team ensures every trip is as enjoyable and rewarding as possible—even for first-time fly fishermen.

Overall, Nate’s Montana fly fishing experiences offer not just great fishing opportunities but heartfelt connections between guides and anglers, careful instruction, and a welcoming atmosphere. For those seeking a top-tier Montana fishing adventure with attentive service and abundant natural beauty, Nate and his crew deliver a truly exceptional day on the water.

Step into the waters of Yellowstone National Park alongside your expert guide for an exhilarating day of fly fishing in one of the most scenic locations available! This trip focuses on wading into Soda Butte Creek, a prime habitat within Yellowstone, where you’ll target the native Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout.

Soda Butte Creek, easily accessible as it mostly runs alongside Highway 212, boasts breathtaking scenery and excellent fishing structure. This accessibility makes it an ideal choice for anglers eager to experience trout fishing in the northeastern area of Yellowstone without undertaking a strenuous hike. On the creek’s lower stretches, from below Icebox Canyon to the Lamar River, average trout size ranges between 12 and 16 inches, with some fish reaching up to 18 to 20 inches. The upper sections of the creek typically yield slightly smaller trout, averaging 8 to 12 inches. Please note, trips to Soda Butte Creek require a minimum commitment of two days.

During these full-day outings, your guide will lead you directly into the creek from Yellowstone Park access points. They will offer professional fly-fishing instruction and encourage you to put your skills to the test. No matter your experience level, your guide is dedicated to helping you catch fish and enjoy every moment on the water.

Wherever you are staying—whether in Bozeman, Ennis, Cameron, Helena, Livingston, West Yellowstone, or Fort Smith, Montana—we can arrange pickup for you. Guides can collect you from your lodging, whether it’s a vacation rental, hotel, lodge, campsite, or even the airport. If your accommodations are distant, you can simply meet your guide at a convenient meeting point for your fishing adventure.

All necessary equipment, including rods, reels, flies, and tippet, will be provided by your guide. A delicious lunch is included during the day to keep you fueled. Should you require wader and wading boot rentals, please inform us at booking; these are available for an additional fee. Remember, you’ll need to purchase a Yellowstone National Park fishing license (note that no state license is required) and pay the park’s $20 entrance fee. We recommend bringing essentials like a hat, sunscreen, polarized sunglasses, and a rain jacket for your comfort throughout the day.

We also offer multiple guided wade fishing trips across the Bozeman and Yellowstone National Park region. To ensure the best possible fishing experience, your guide might suggest alternate lakes or rivers if conditions are more favorable elsewhere. Whether you prefer to fish Soda Butte Creek or explore other locations, feel free to book your trip through this listing—your guide will contact you to discuss your options and tailor your adventure.
