About Your Guide

Captain Mike hails from Baltimore, Maryland, and was raised in Westminster. His fishing journey began at just 4 years old, casting lines in a small stream near his childhood home. Growing up in Maryland offered him diverse fishing environments including ponds, streams, lakes, the Atlantic Ocean, and the famed Chesapeake Bay. Initially, Mike pursued a career as an electrician. However, at 26, a devastating accident occurred—he fell through a roof 30 feet high, resulting in a broken neck. Against all odds, through determination and rehabilitation, he made a full recovery.

This life-changing event inspired Mike to embrace each day wholeheartedly. Fuelled by his lifelong passion for the water, he shifted his focus to scuba diving. After becoming a dive instructor, Mike relocated to Islamorada in the Florida Keys, where he operated a dive shop. Soon, he expanded his venture by purchasing an offshore boat to launch a fishing charter business.

Sharing his enthusiasm and expertise for fishing became a new source of joy for Mike. He loved meeting new people and couldn’t imagine a better workplace than beneath the open sky and surrounded by endless water. Sailfish quickly became his favorite catch. Mike competed in numerous local fishing tournaments, frequently placing in the top three spots.

After some time, Mike transitioned to backcountry and flats fishing, selling his offshore boat to fully dedicate himself as a backcountry fishing guide. His skills earned him victories in multiple backcountry fishing competitions, a pursuit he continues to follow passionately.

Throughout his career, Mike has had the privilege of guiding a diverse group of clients, including a former president, athletes, actors, senators, and many fascinating fishermen. He treasures every moment and has an endless treasure trove of stories filled with unique events and encounters.

Mike’s journey has also led him to become a valued part of The American Outdoorsman community, where he proudly serves as a member of their Pro Staff. He eagerly shares his deep knowledge and passion for fishing with fellow enthusiasts.

With over four decades of experience as a fishing guide, Mike’s recovery from his severe accident is remarkable — today, he shows no visible signs of his past trauma. He remains dedicated to fully enjoying life and appreciating every day.

Captain Mike’s fishing fleet features three boats: a 22-foot Pathfinder, a 19-foot Action Craft, and a 22-foot Triton. Operating out of Robbie’s Marina in Islamorada, Florida (at mile marker 77.5 on the Overseas Highway), Mike has two additional captains working alongside him. He offers a range of fishing trips including half-day (4 hours), three-quarter day (6 hours), and full-day (8 hours) excursions in the stunning backcountry and ocean flats of the Florida Keys.

Mike welcomes families and children aboard and provides an assortment of fly rods and spinning gear to help anglers target premier species such as bonefish, tarpon, sharks, permit, snapper, snook, trout, and redfish.

Here’s what some guests have shared about their experiences: "Had a fantastic time with Captain Chris. We caught plenty of fish and shared lots of laughs. An unexpected technical issue came up but Captains Mike and Chris handled it smoothly and humorously. We’ll definitely be back."

"Captain Phil ensured we had a great day on the water, catching fish throughout the entire eight-hour trip. Even when the bite slowed, he searched diligently to find the action. We achieved our trout limit within the first hour, and he taught me valuable casting tips, especially for fishing under mangroves. Looking forward to another outing soon."

"Our second trip with this guide was amazing—without hesitation, I highly recommend it! Great fishermen, fun times, and excellent weather made for a wonderful day on the water."

"Captain Phil skillfully found us some beautiful snapper in the mangroves. The fresh snapper prepared at Robbie’s restaurant was a delicious bonus—Thai style was outstanding. Overall, a memorable and highly recommended trip."

"Phil’s friendly nature and fishing expertise had us catching fish rapidly despite being novices. A truly enjoyable experience."

"Although it was a slow day, fishing with Captain Chris was still excellent and engaging. We plan to return!"

"Captain Mike is an exceptional guide! With over 30 years of experience, he eagerly took us fly-fishing around Islamorada, bringing an extra reel when ours jammed. He introduced us to stunning tarpon and permit flats with plentiful opportunities to cast at giant fish. Capt. Mike’s vast skills and knowledge truly set him apart."
