About Your Guide

Captain Alex is an expert in fly fishing for Bonefish, Permit, Tarpon, Redfish, Snook, and Sharks within the stunning and abundant flats of the Florida Keys. Fly fishing is his preferred method, and he offers personalized guidance and coaching tailored to your skill level to help you meet your fishing objectives. In addition to fishing charters, he provides fly casting lessons. However, it’s highly recommended that you invest ample time practicing casting beforehand or engage a casting instructor to make the most of your time on the water.

The fish in the Keys are known for being elusive, large, and wary, and things can quickly go awry if you’re not well prepared. Anyone suggesting otherwise isn’t being truthful. While Captain Alex guarantees opportunities to hook fish, your success ultimately depends on your preparation and effort. Precision is key, so practicing your casting skills ahead of your trip is essential.

Late winter through spring are his favorite seasons, coinciding with the Tarpon migration and the increased movement of fish into backcountry areas, passes, inlets, and oceanfront locations within the Keys. Although spring offers peak fish concentrations, Tarpon can be caught year-round at various spots. According to Captain Alex, fly fishing for Tarpon is incredibly addictive. “Spotting a school of Tarpon cruising over clear flats or a single fish resting just below the surface is a thrill you won’t forget. Making that cast, watching the fish track your fly, opening its mouth to inhale the fly, and then launching into spectacular aerial acrobatics while pulling line off your reel — it’s a feeling that hooks you for life.”

He emphasizes the importance of being an adept caster. “If you’ve never handled a 10wt, 11wt, or 12wt fly rod before, do not arrive at the dock expecting to learn on the fly while fish are present. Even occasional practice won’t suffice. You’ll likely lose valuable time and money. It’s crucial to dedicate weeks or months to improving your casting before your trip. You should be capable of double hauling, generating line speed, and casting accurately. Mastery of the backhand cast will also boost your chances of success.”

The Keys often experience winds averaging 10 to 15 knots, with many days reaching 15 to 20 knots or higher. Since fishing tends to improve in windier conditions, learning to cast effectively in the wind is necessary. There are numerous resources, including books and online materials, focused on fly casting and Tarpon fly fishing that Captain Alex encourages anglers to explore. Investing in lessons with a qualified casting instructor is also highly worthwhile. The same level of skill and preparation applies to pursuing other prized flats species such as Permit and Bonefish, which are equally demanding and challenging.

One angler shared, “I had an amazing trip with Alex. He put me on several fish, and I even landed my first Snook at 33 inches! He’s incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about his craft.”
