Captain John is more than just a fishing guide; he's a well-known figure throughout Lake Buchanan and the greater Highland Lakes area, earning high regard from both anglers and other captains. With close to 30 years in the guiding industry, his expertise runs deep, matching the depth of the lake itself. He holds an esteemed Master License from the U.S. Coast Guard, showcasing his ability to captain professional fishing vessels up to 92 feet in length, which goes well beyond the local waters.
Calling his love for fishing a mere hobby doesn't do it justice—it's a passion that drives him intensely. This enthusiasm has powered numerous successful fishing adventures in a variety of locations, from the renowned Tongue of the Ocean to the beautiful lakes he now calls home. Wherever he has cast his line around the world, fish have surely felt the impact of his iconic shout, “Fish On!”
When you board Captain John's boat, you're not just signing up for a fishing trip; you're joining a seasoned expert whose life revolves around the water and the excitement of the catch. His mission is to deliver an exceptional outing, sharing valuable insights and making sure you get the chance to experience the thrill of landing that prized catch.
He’s flexible with pickup points to accommodate your needs. Customers often praise his guidance and the quality of his boat, noting that many have reached their limits in under an hour, followed by a quick return to the dock to clean the fish. Although some have found the 41 steps leading to the boat challenging—particularly those with knee issues—Captain John always looks for ways to improve the experience, including offering alternative pickup locations with easier access.
One guest shared how much they enjoyed their time on the water, noting that despite the steps, the fishing was excellent and their wife landed the biggest fish of the day. They expressed gratitude for the opportunity to fish Lake Buchanan and experience its plentiful fish stocks firsthand, with hopes of trying a different boarding spot next time. Blessings and thanks were exchanged warmly.
Another group of six had an amazing outing with Captain John, praising his professionalism and knowledge of where to find the best schools of fish. Even when conditions were less than ideal, John kept them right in the thick of the action. Their catch included a wide range of species such as stripers, white bass, drum, and catfish, with everyone bringing in several fish. John also filleted their haul at the dock, allowing them to enjoy fresh ceviche the same day—making for a highly recommended experience.
On a windy day that made fishing tricky, Captain John's expertise remained a highlight, ensuring a memorable trip despite the challenging weather.
