Ideal depths range from 1 to 20 feet, commonly near the surface or just above the bottom in shallow bays and estuaries.
Recoqnisable features
Typically silver to light gray with a distinctive dark spot on the base of the tail. Some individuals show faint yellow or greenish hues along the body.
They have a forked tail fin with the dark spot near its base, a spiny dorsal fin followed by a softer dorsal section, and rounded pectoral and anal fins.
Notable for a single large black spot at the tail base, with otherwise uniform colored body and subtle vertical bands or spots sometimes visible.
