He spent his early years exploring rivers like the Bighorn, Yellowstone, Stillwater, and Boulder, later beginning his guiding career in 1999 while studying at Montana State University. One recent trip with Nate’s guide, Patrick, was a fantastic experience—Patrick proved to be a consummate professional who made the outing enjoyable and easy to follow, especially for newcomers. Fishing the Yellowstone River in a drift boat was a long-held goal, and luck was on my side to achieve it. With plenty of fishing experience under my belt, I was pleased when the day unfolded perfectly. Meeting our guide, Nathan, at 8 a.m., we quickly hit the water. As novices in fly fishing, we benefited immensely from Nathan’s 35 years of local river experience. His patience, skill, and friendly nature made the day outstanding. Using large grasshopper fly patterns on topwater was our strategy, and it was thrilling to observe the wide range of fish reactions—from aggressive strikes to gentle inspections. Although it took a bit of practice, I managed to catch a few small rainbows, a technique I'll apply in future trips.

My companion faced more challenges but persisted, and later in the day, Nathan switched tactics to a nymph rig with an indicator, which finally resulted in some catches for her. Throughout the day, Nathan remained patient despite the rookie mistakes and tangled gear, even sharing laughs when the casting mishaps piled up. Though the bite was steady rather than fast, Nathan’s adjustments kept us engaged and successful, even in a busy river setting with plenty of other anglers and occasional traffic conflicts.
