Your Guide: Matt S.

About Your Guide

Matt's passion for fishing began in the Shenandoah Valley and its nearby waters, exploring everything from small native trout streams to larger rivers. His journey eventually took him to Alaska, where he worked as a guide on the Alagnak River, targeting all five species of salmon, along with grayling, Dolly Varden, and trout. With over 30 years of experience, Matt has built a career both as a carpenter and a fishing guide, focusing primarily on fly fishing. Whether you prefer streamer fishing, dry flies, tight lining, float trips, wade fishing, or camping excursions, Matt is well-versed in them all.

The Valley offers a rich diversity of fish, including trout, smallmouth bass, carp, largemouth bass, and musky, each best pursued at the right time and place. Matt is certified in first aid and CPR, and is known for his strength and endurance, making your trip both safe and enjoyable. He is also adaptable, able to meet you at a convenient starting location for your adventure.

Matt’s clients often praise his dedication and effort to ensure a great experience, even when fishing conditions are challenging. One guest shared, “Fishing was slow, but the river and weather more than made up for the slow action. Matt was an excellent guide and put in the effort to make the trip memorable.” He looks forward to welcoming you and making your time on the water a wonderful one.

Dive into the pristine waters of the Shenandoah Valley with Matt, and discover fishing adventures that lead you far from crowded spots into some of Virginia’s most picturesque and fertile freshwater environments. Whether you're after native brook trout in secluded mountain streams or chasing the spirited smallmouth bass among the rocky currents of the Shenandoah River, these guided half-day and full-day excursions are crafted for anglers eager to explore on foot, connect with nature, and land memorable catches.

For trout enthusiasts, Matt provides exclusive access to private spring-fed streams and hidden backcountry creeks inhabited by brook trout, brown trout, and rainbow trout. These carefully managed, lightly fished waters offer peaceful surroundings perfect for pursuing wild trout using dry flies, nymphs, or streamers—tailored to the hatch and season. From dynamic pocket water to mellow, smooth runs, each stretch presents unique challenges and the opportunity to hook exceptional fish.

If your preference is smallmouth bass, Matt will lead you to prime sections of the Shenandoah River—including the main stem, its North and South Forks, and nearby rivers like the Potomac and North River. These locations feature abundant structure and current breaks ideal for enticing bronzebacks with topwater flies, streamers, or traditional tackle. Along the way, expect to encounter largemouth bass and carp, particularly in slower pools and side channels.

Both fly fishing and conventional tackle are welcome, with trips customized to match your skill level and objectives. All flies are provided, but you’re encouraged to bring your own gear if preferred. For those without waders, Matt offers a limited selection of loaner pairs. Full-day trips include a lunch break, allowing time to rest and recharge between productive fishing sessions, while half-day trips zero in on the best windows for action, whether it's a crisp morning on a mountain creek or an evening river bite.

All outings practice catch-and-release policies. For anglers seeking greater seclusion, private water access is available for an additional fee. Be sure to have a valid freshwater fishing license for Virginia or West Virginia; some spots also require trout stamps or National Forest permits. When booking, Matt will guide you through all necessary permits and requirements for your specific fishing destination.
