I grew up in the Lower Rio Grande Valley after being born in Rio Grande City, Texas, in 1985. My early years were deeply influenced by a strong connection to nature and outdoor activities. From childhood, I developed a keen interest in hunting, wildlife calling, and marksmanship. Living in South Texas allowed me to build and refine my skills and knowledge as a dedicated outdoors enthusiast. Guiding on various ranches has enriched my understanding of predator management and the vital role it plays in preserving wildlife populations.
Over the last six years, I have specialized in leading fishing expeditions, focusing on wade fishing, drifting, bottom fishing, and flounder gigging. Additionally, I provide exciting airboat trips through brackish environments where we target species such as alligator gar, redfish, and catfish. My extensive experience and commitment guarantee each guest an enjoyable and productive fishing outing.
During most summers, I serve as the captain for my charter, Waist Deep Fishing, navigating the waters of the Lower Laguna Madre. Clients consistently praise the quality of the trips, highlighting the fun atmosphere and favorable conditions that make every adventure memorable.

Flounder gigging in the shallow coastal waters of South Texas, especially around Port Mansfield and the Lower Laguna Madre, offers anglers a thrilling and distinctive experience. This nocturnal activity blends the excitement of fishing with the tranquil charm of the coastline, creating lasting memories.
As dusk settles and night takes over, you prepare your gear for the outing. Essential equipment includes a sturdy gig—a long pole tipped with a multi-pronged spear—a bright underwater light, and suitable footwear for wading through shallow waters. Some prefer using a flat-bottom boat or an airboat outfitted with powerful lights to better illuminate the seabed for an enhanced experience.
The adventure begins as you glide into the calm, shallow waters. Nightfall transforms the coastal surroundings into a peaceful and almost magical setting. The cool air, gentle water sounds, and occasional nocturnal bird calls create a serene soundtrack. Your powerful lights cut through the darkness, revealing the sandy or muddy bottom where flounder lie concealed.
Flounder are experts at blending into their environment, making sharp observation and patience crucial to success. Moving slowly, you scan the illuminated seabed for the subtle shape of a flounder resting flat against the bottom. Recognizing these well-camouflaged fish takes practice and knowledge of their habits and preferred habitats.
Once spotted, the key is to approach without startling the fish. Quick movements or excessive noise will likely scare it away. With steady hands and careful aim, you then thrust the gig, securing the flounder before it can escape. The thrill following a successful strike is intense—a reward for your patience, skill, and focus.
Throughout the night, the excitement of the catch is enhanced by the peaceful coastal surroundings. The shimmering reflections of lights on the water contribute to the magical atmosphere, while stars twinkle above and distant shore lights glow faintly.
Flounder gigging also provides a unique glimpse into nighttime marine life. While wading or floating nearby, you might observe crabs scurrying along the bottom or schools of fish illuminated by your light—a reminder of the diverse coastal ecosystem that thrives after dark.
As the night wears on and your catch grows, a sense of accomplishment deepens. Flounder are prized for their tender and flavorful meat, making the evening’s efforts especially rewarding. Once back at the dock or campsite, you clean and prepare the fish, often grilling or frying them simply to savor their fresh taste, forging a direct connection between the chase and the meal.
Far beyond just another fishing technique, flounder gigging in South Texas is a full immersive adventure. It blends skill, patience, and nature appreciation in a quiet, beautiful nighttime setting. Whether an experienced angler or a beginner, this unique experience promises excitement, calm, and unforgettable moments in the coastal waters of South Texas.
