Your Guide: John A.

About Your Guide

Captain John holds a USCG license and brings over 29 years of experience in charter fishing. His adventurous journey has taken him from the coasts of Africa to the diverse waters of Alaska, as well as numerous lakes, rivers, and oceans across the globe. He began his fishing career at just nine years old, working alongside his father on Lakes Erie and Ontario. There, he mastered a wide array of species — from walleye and yellow perch in Lake Erie to King salmon, Steelhead, and Coho salmon in Lake Ontario.

Following high school, Captain John joined the Coast Guard, broadening his maritime skills and knowledge. He then pursued commercial fishing on Chesapeake Bay while also working as a deckhand out of Virginia Beach. During this period, he spent five months fishing off the African coast, targeting marlin, tuna, and a variety of other ocean species. This diverse background allowed him to refine his techniques and develop a reputation as a top-tier fishing guide.

In 2013, he launched his own charter business on Kodiak Island, Alaska. Over seven seasons, Captain John specialized in pursuing large halibut, salmon, and lingcod. Eventually, he returned to the East Coast, eager to challenge himself further and hunt the giants of the deep sea with elite fishermen. Captaining a trip with John guarantees an experience filled with safety, excitement, and expert fish-finding skills—no matter where you are out on the water.

Highly skilled and knowledgeable, Captain John expertly guided us to prime spots for tuna and tilefish. Despite operating a smaller offshore vessel, the boat handled 3-4 foot seas at 30 miles offshore smoothly and securely. Upon returning, Captain John even prepared our catch for us. I enthusiastically recommend him for anyone looking for an outstanding fishing adventure.

Our time with John was fantastic — he kept us hooked from the moment we left the dock until it was time to head back. His deckhand was equally impressive, attentively baiting hooks and managing catches throughout the trip. They also filleted every fish for us after the outing. It was truly an unforgettable day on the water.

Our trips last between 7 to 8 hours, taking us anywhere from 3 to 20 miles beyond the inlet. During these excursions, we engage in a variety of fishing techniques including live baiting and jigging near the towers, as well as trolling to catch faster species. Anglers can expect to target a wide range of fish such as Amberjack, Blackfin Tuna, Kingfish, Mahi, and occasionally encounter Sailfish. These outings are packed with excitement, featuring plenty of action and strong, hard-fighting fish on light tackle—some of my absolute favorite trips to lead.
