About Your Guide

Captain Zachary, a 32-year-old licensed captain based in New Buffalo, MI, proudly serves the Southwest Michigan region. His passion for fishing was sparked early by his father, Donald, who encouraged him to pursue his dream of becoming an exceptional fishing guide. From just 12 years old, Zach gained hands-on experience working as a deckhand, honing his skills targeting species like salmon, trout, and walleye across Lake Michigan and the surrounding waterways of Northwest Indiana and Southwest Michigan.

Zach's deep connection to the water inspired him to attend the College of Charleston, where he pursued studies in Anthropology and Archaeology, with a special focus on Marine Archaeology. During this time, he contributed to the Maritime Research Division of South Carolina by helping recover and document historical marine artifacts and prehistoric animal remains. Alongside his academic work, he earned his Divemaster and rescue diving certifications in Utila, Honduras, becoming a professional scuba diver.

After college, Zach moved back to Northwest Indiana and Southwest Michigan to work with his father’s environmental cleanup business while beginning plans to establish his own fishing guide venture. His life took a significant turn in the summer of 2020 when he fished Lake St. Clair targeting musky for the first time, igniting a new passion.

Tragically, shortly after this transformative trip, Zach lost his father, Don, to mental health struggles. Don was a remarkable individual—an avid fisherman renowned for his walleye expertise—and embodied the hardworking spirit of the American dream. His tight-knit circle of friends, affectionately called the “Wolfpack” by Don, inspired Zach to name his guide service in their honor. The “Wolfpack” spirit reflects Zach's approach to guiding: fostering a supportive community where anglers uplift one another, enhancing their fishing skills, knowledge, and enthusiasm.

Musky fishing can be challenging on multiple levels—physical, mental, and emotional—but the thrill of landing one of these majestic fish is deeply rewarding and addictive, a passion that Zach has fully embraced. He aims to deliver memorable fishing experiences filled with learning, skill development, and a relaxed, welcoming environment alongside the exciting chance to catch trophy fish.

Now operating out of Detroit, MI, Captain Zachary offers musky and walleye fishing guide services, including casting, trolling, and jigging trips around Lake St. Clair and nearby waterways. His guide business launched in the summer of 2021, with musky fishing trips beginning in June 2022 and walleye expeditions following in March 2023. Flexibility with start locations is offered to accommodate clients' needs, and many have praised the quality and enjoyment of their time fishing with Zach.

Looking forward to creating unforgettable fishing adventures and welcoming you as part of the “Wolfpack”!

Casting for musky is one of the most fulfilling methods to pursue these impressive fish. Although it may sound straightforward, casting demands significant energy, sharp mental focus, and strong commitment. On Lake St. Clair, we rely on heavy-duty gear, commonly using 400-500 series bait-casting reels paired with 8’6” to 10’ XXXH rods. Fishing lines for casting setups usually consist of 80-120LB braided line combined with fluorocarbon leaders rated between 100-200LB.

The reason for employing such robust equipment is to handle the large rubber baits typically used here, which range from 7.5 to 16 ounces or more. This heavy-duty gear is also essential to endure the power of the massive muskies that inhabit Lake St. Clair. From June through December, casting proves to be a highly effective technique and provides an electrifying experience. The sensation of a musky striking while casting is unlike any other, often happening right alongside the boat as you execute your figure 8.
