As soon as you depart from Honokohau Harbor, you’ll be right in the heart of the fishing action. Unlike many other prime big-game fishing locations that demand a 50+ mile trip offshore, Kona’s prime spots are located just a stone’s throw from the harbor. The region’s calm, sunny sea conditions and steep underwater drop-offs make big-game fishing accessible just a quarter-mile from shore—an unmatched advantage anywhere in the world.
Once you’ve got your lines in the water, prepare to target some of the ocean’s most formidable gamefish, especially the legendary Blue Marlin. Hawaii holds the record for the largest Blue Marlin ever caught and consistently produces world-class catches in these blue waters. While Blue Marlin are a major highlight, you’ll also have excellent chances to hook Ono (Wahoo), Striped Marlin, Ahi Tuna, Mahi Mahi, Shortnose Spearfish, Yellowfin Tuna, and Skipjack Tuna—each known for their exceptional taste and thrilling fight.
Fishing techniques include both trolling with lures and live-baiting. Trolling is the most common method, allowing anglers to cover more water efficiently. Live-baiting involves using small tunas or mackerels caught during your trip, often providing a fun hands-on experience for younger anglers.
