Ryan’s passion for the outdoors began at an early age when he first picked up fishing at around three years old. Growing up in south and central Texas, he spent countless hours fishing lakes and rivers, teaching himself everything he could about bass and catfish. During his college years, Ryan managed an outdoor recreation store, which introduced him to kayaking and fly fishing. Today, he enjoys fly fishing not only for bass and other warm-water species but also for trout. In recent years, he has developed a particular enthusiasm for fly fishing targeting common carp. In 2019, Ryan earned the title of Texas Carp King in the Texas Fly Carpers United Tournament by reeling in a total of 448.5 inches of carp during the three-part competition.
After many years exploring the rivers of central Texas and the Texas coastline with his fly rod, fishing has truly become a central part of Ryan’s lifestyle. He possesses extensive knowledge about fish species, fishing techniques, as well as the natural history and geology that make central Texas’s outdoors uniquely captivating. He offers flexible guide services that can start at various locations tailored to your preferences.
Ryan is an outstanding guide who helps newcomers learn the essentials of fly fishing, ensuring a rewarding experience. Many clients have shared positive feedback, mentioning how enjoyable their trips were while catching numerous trout and appreciating the opportunity to visit river areas they might not have discovered on their own. Ryan is a well-informed Texan and a friendly guide who brings both expertise and enthusiasm to every outing. Clients frequently express their excitement to return for future trips with him and his partner Thomas, praising their friendliness and deep knowledge of local waterways. Highly recommended for anyone looking to experience the best of fly fishing in Texas!

Dress according to the weather, and polarized sunglasses are highly recommended. Wear suitable footwear that can handle getting wet, especially since you may need to walk along riverbanks with rocks, gravel, and prickly plants.
The San Marcos River originates at Aquarena Springs in the city of San Marcos and runs for 75 miles until it meets the Guadalupe River. It is renowned for its clear turquoise waters, vibrant and varied plant life along the banks, and steady water flow throughout the year.
Our guided trips focus on multiple full and half sections stretching from just downstream of San Marcos to the town of Luling. We primarily fish for largemouth and Guadalupe bass, but also target other native Texas species such as Rio Grande Cichlid, longnose and spotted gar, and a variety of sunfish and perch species.
During the trip, you will float several miles of river, immersing yourself in the natural beauty and diverse wildlife of the area. We use an inflatable drift boat raft equipped with the latest NRS fishing frame, featuring two comfortable padded swivel seats for anglers, as well as standing platforms and lean bars. The boat accommodates two anglers plus a guide who rows. Our main technique involves casting topwater poppers and sinking streamers close to the riverbanks to provoke bass strikes.
With nearly ten years of guiding experience in the Texas Hill Country, I bring a deep connection to these limestone waterways, having fished and navigated them since childhood. My uncle has owned property on the upper Guadalupe River for over 25 years, and I attended Texas State University partly because the San Marcos River flows through the campus. I am passionate about sharing my expertise and enthusiasm, welcoming anglers of all skill levels, and am happy to teach newcomers to fly fishing.
